At a first glance at period images, photographs and fashion plates showing men, it is striking, how similar the clothing appears to more formal styles worn even today.  The interpreter has to look beyond this similarity to tease out the Civil War era masculine look.  When one looks beyond the "what is worn" to the "how it is worn" one will notice some significant differences.  Those are the differences that require special attention when the proper look is to be created.
